Challenger Bracket Semi Finals: Maryland 34, Oklahoma 12

June 3, 2012 1 comment

Maryland used speed to pick up a win in the semifinal round of the challenger bracket. The Terrapins were the fourth team out of Pool B but look like a different squad on Sunday. A 34-12 win against Oklahoma moved Maryland in to the final round of the challenger bracket.

Oklahoma’s William Pham opened the scoring in the second minute, but Maryland took the lead with two straight scores, but no conversions, by Trevor Tanifum. The Sooners took a lead to the break after Michael Al-Jiboori scored a late try and Peter Santos made the conversion for a 12-10 halftime lead.

Tanifum took advantage of an Oklahoma turnover on their own side of the pitch, running in with nobody in front of him for a try to put Maryland on top 17-12 following a successful conversion for more two points. The Terps picked up another try, by Matthew Quigley, after another mis-play by Oklahoma deep in their own end. Maryland used speed to their advantage when they kicked the ball forward and Tanifum outran everybody for another try.

Maryland will play the winner of the match between North Carolina State and Florida.

Challenger Bracket: Oklahoma 21, Notre Dame 19

The Oklahoma Sooners held strong as Notre Dame attempted to pick up a late try, and the Sooners moved on to the next round with a 21-19 victory.

In a back-and-forth tilt between the two, Notre Dame and Oklahoma traded scores from start to finish, but a missed conversion by Notre Dame ended up coming back to hurt the Fighting Irish. Oklahoma’s Bobby Impson provided the bulk of the scores for the Sooners, scoring one try and three conversions for 11 points.

Oklahoma will face Maryland in the next round. The Terrapins stunned Penn State late in their earlier match.

Match 22: Texas 28, Oklahoma 19

The Red River Rivalry moved to the Delaware River Saturday evening, with the Texas Longhorns besting the Oklahoma Sooners by the final score of 28-19. The win places the Longhorns in the championship bracket as the second seed from Pool C.

Texas opened the scoring with a try and conversion from Taylor Hayes one minute in to the match. The Sooners tied it up on the next possession with Bradley Henry pushing in for a try but a missed conversion kept the Longhorns in front. Texas then struck right back and the Longhorns took a 19-5 lead in to the half.

Texas would extend their lead to 28-5 before the Sooners started to put together some late pressure. Bradley Henry’s try in the eleven minute mark and Bobby Impson’s conversion was followed up by Michael Al-Jiboori’s try and another Impson conversion to cut the Texas lead to 28-19 late, but the Longhorns were able to work some clock and hold off their usual Big 12 rivals.

With the win, Texas moves in to the championship bracket as the Pool C two-seed. Their opponent will be determined following the conclusion of round robin play in Pool D. The Sooners will also have to wait to learn their opponent in the challenger’s bracket, although Notre Dame looks to be the most likely opponent.

Match 14: Oklahoma 21, North Carolina State 10

With both squads coming off losses in their first matches of the day, neither Oklahoma nor North Carolina State could  afford a second straight loss. Oklahoma picked up a key victory thanks to a late score to beat N.C. State, 14-10.

Bobby Impson opened the scoring late in the first half by giving Oklahoma a 7-0 lead after a try and a conversion, but N.C. State’s Brandon Mosiman made sure the Wolfpack would put a dent on the board before halftime. A missed conversion kept the Sooners on top at the break. Midway through the second half N.C. State’s Dylan Martin notched a try to give the Wolfpack a 10-7 lead, but Impson put the Sooners back on top with a long try and a successful conversion in the final minutes. After the whistle N.C. State looked to have a scoring opportunity, but Oklahoma returned a turnover for a try to cap the game at 21-10 after a successful conversion.

Oklahoma moves on to play Texas in Match 22 at 6:21 p.m. The winner of that match-up will advance to the championship round on Sunday. The loser will move to the Challenger rounds. N.C. State will play Arizona at 6:00 p.m. The Wildcats have two dominating victories today with blowout wins against Oklahoma and Texas.

Arizona and Oklahoma opened Pool C play, with the Wildcats wasting little time jumping out to a two-score lead of 12-0. Patrick Jones tied the match in the second half for the Sooners, but Arizona’s Peter Tiberio broke the tie with his second try of the match, and made the conversion to put Arizona on top, 19-12, with time winding down. A late turnover by Oklahoma allowed Brett Thompson to run almost uncontested for a late try and conversion to pull away, 26-12. One final try by Arizona in the closing seconds was the final try of the match, with Arizona winning 31-12.

Arizona returns to the pitch at 2:34 to take on Texas in Match 13. Oklahoma will take on North Carolina State in match 14 at 2:57.
