Challenger Final: Florida 20, Maryland 14

Florida had a rough going in pool play, but they managed to beat Maryland in their first match of the weekend. Perhaps fittingly, the Gators wrapped up their weekend with another victory against the Terps. In a rematch of Saturday’s game, Florida and Maryland met in the Challenger Final, playing solely for pride at this point. Florida took the challenger’s final, 20-14.

Maryland’s Matthew Quigley opened the scoring with an early try and a conversion gave the Terps a quick 7-0 lead in the first minute. But Florida’s Joshua Nicdao put the Gators on the board in the third and seventh minutes with a try to take  a lead in to the half. Michael Breske’s try in the tenth minute extended the Florida lead to 15-7 in the second half. Maryland’s Karl Rempe dashed down the left sideline for a try late in the half for the final score of the match.

Challenger Bracket Semi Finals: Maryland 34, Oklahoma 12

June 3, 2012 1 comment

Maryland used speed to pick up a win in the semifinal round of the challenger bracket. The Terrapins were the fourth team out of Pool B but look like a different squad on Sunday. A 34-12 win against Oklahoma moved Maryland in to the final round of the challenger bracket.

Oklahoma’s William Pham opened the scoring in the second minute, but Maryland took the lead with two straight scores, but no conversions, by Trevor Tanifum. The Sooners took a lead to the break after Michael Al-Jiboori scored a late try and Peter Santos made the conversion for a 12-10 halftime lead.

Tanifum took advantage of an Oklahoma turnover on their own side of the pitch, running in with nobody in front of him for a try to put Maryland on top 17-12 following a successful conversion for more two points. The Terps picked up another try, by Matthew Quigley, after another mis-play by Oklahoma deep in their own end. Maryland used speed to their advantage when they kicked the ball forward and Tanifum outran everybody for another try.

Maryland will play the winner of the match between North Carolina State and Florida.

Challenger Bracket: Maryland 28, Penn State 26

Just as they were a day ago, Penn State was in full control of their match until the final moments. In their opening round match-up in the challenger bracket, Penn State let one slip away against Maryland, who scored three times in the second half to edge the Nittany Lions, 28-26.

Penn State took a 26-7 lead before the Terps stormed back in the second half. Penn State’s defense could not keep up with Trevor Tanifum, who broke a pair of runs loose for a try to give the Terps some life. John Davis tied the game after the buzzer at 26-26, and Patrick Pacious kicked the match-winning conversion to get Maryland in to the second round.

Maryland will face the winner of the Oklahoma and Notre Dame match.

Match 17: Delaware 38, Maryland 14

While Penn State and Temple failed to grab the home field advantage, Delaware has become the hometown team in the Collegiate Rugby Championships. Delaware advanced to the championship round with a 38-14 victory against Maryland, improving to 2-1.

Delaware had to come from behind early on after Maryland jumped in front with a try and conversion, but the Blue Hens shut out Maryland in the second half to pull away with a solid victory. The Terps looked to take a lead in to the half but Delaware’s John Vannoy picked up a try and Christopher Mattina picked up a pair of conversions to pull ahead at the break.

Delaware will advance to the championship bracket on Sunday, owning a head-to-head tiebreaker with Florida. The Blue Hens will open up the championship bracket against LIFE, who was 3-0 on Saturday in Pool A. Maryland will move on to the challenger bracket on Sunday, and will take on Penn State in the first round.

Dartmouth is clearly on a mission this morning. Two matches in and the defending champions have walked off the pitch with a pair of dominating victories. Dartmouth improved to 2-0 with a 31-7 takedown of Maryland.

Maryland took a 7-5 lead in the first half but Dartmouth scored twice before halftime to take command. Kevin Clark and Paul Jarvis each recorded a try before halftime to build a nice lead for Dartmouth, and the second half saw the lone Ivy League representative pull away with the win.

Dartmouth’s next match is scheduled for 4:35, and they will take on Florida (1-0). The Gators defeated Maryland earlier in the morning, 19-7. Maryland returns to the field at 4:06 to take on Delaware. Delaware could be in a tough situation, as the Blue Hens will open up the afternoon session against Florida, and play two hours later to wrap up the first afternoon segment.

Match 4: Florida 19, Maryland 7

Maryland dazzled early with a long scoring run down the left sideline by Trevor Tanifum, using speed to his advantage along the way and never looking back. The Terps and Gators would go to the half tied at 7-7. It was not until midway through the second half that Florida broke the tie, but after missing the conversion the Gators held a 12-7 lead. Maryland attempted to work the entire field to score for the next couple of minutes but Florida’s defense held strong and turned the momentum the other way with a long scoring try of their own to pull away and seal a victory in the final minute, 19-7.

Florida will open the afternoon session against Delaware (0-1), who lost to Dartmouth in Match 3 31-5. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:11 p.m. Maryland will wrap up the morning session against Dartmouth (1-0) in Match 11.
