Bronze Medal Match: Cal 26, LIFE 7

Cal defeated LIFE for the bronze in the 2012 Collegiate Rugby Championship, by building up a huge lead against the Eagles and never giving LIFE much chance with bruising defense. Cal won the third place match 26-7.

Cal struck twice in the first half, first with Seamus Kelly scoring a try in the second minute, with Paul Bosco adding the conversion, and Connor Ring scoring four minutes later on a try, with Bosco again adding the conversion for a 14-0 lead. The halftime lead was pushed to 21-0 following a controversial call.

Down 26-0 midway through the second half, LIFE finally put a dent on the scoreboard with a try by Cornelius Dirksen and conversion by Joseph Cowley, but it would be too little, too late for the Eagles.

Cal finishes their season with a 20-3 record. Life wraps up their season with a 10-5 record.

They say in football that defense wins championships. Perhaps the same may hold true in rugby as well. LIFE and Arizona, who had shown some high-powered offense this weekend, played a tight first half, with Arizona taking a 7-5 lead in to the half.

In the second half though, Arizona picked up the scoring with Jack Arnold and Peter Tiberio getting the scoring going, helping Arizona open a 19-5 lead. LIFE’s Darien Woodson giving LIFE a little momentum. A late ally was stalled when the carrier dropped the ball, sealing the match for Arizona as the buzzer had already gone off.

Arizona advances to play the winner of Dartmouth and California in the championship match. LIFE will take on the loser in a consolation match.

LIFE advanced to the second round of the Championship Rounds on Sunday, with a tournament opening victory against the home town favorites from Delaware. The tough and intense match saw little scoring and stingy defense from both sides, but LIFE topped Delaware with 12 unanswered points in a 12-5 decision.

Delaware opened the scoring, perhaps stunning LIFE with an aggressive attack that frustrated the Eagles. James Kowalski worked his way in for a try to give the Blue Hens an early 5-0 lead. LIFE would tie things up with a try run by Cornelius Dirksen, and a conversion by Colton Cariaga put LIFE on top, 7-5. LIFE extended their lead to 12-5 following a Cameron Dolan try.

LIFE will take on Arizona in the second round.

LIFE was in firm control from start to finish in their final match of the day against Wisconsin. After needing a furious second half rally in the final moments against Penn State, LIFE outscored Temple and Wisconsin by a combined 69-19, beating the Badgers 36-12. Despite the loss, Wisconsin still advances to the championship round thanks to Penn State’s defeat of Temple prior to the match.

LIFE put up 24 points before the Badgers could manage a try. Cameron Dolan, Jacob McFadden and Colton Cariaga all scored for LIFE in the first half to put LIFE up 24-0 heading to the break. Wisconsin’s Kurtis Shepherd broke the streak but LIFE continued to work the scoreboard with a long run by McFadden.

LIFE clinched the top spot out of Pool A and will play either Florida or Delaware in their first match on Sunday in the championship round. Wisconsin will likely play Ivy League power Dartmouth, who dominated Delaware (31-5) and Maryland (31-7) earlier on Saturday.

After stunning Penn State with a late rally in the first match of the day, LIFE picked up right where they left off against the Temple Owls. LIFE jumped out to an early lead against the hometown favorites from Temple, taking a 21-0 lead in to the half after dominating the first seven minutes of the match.

Temple got on the scoreboard with a long run for a try by Alex Schmucker, who broke a tackle just past midfield on his otherwise uncontested run for the score. Glen Maricelli of LIFE scored twice in the match to help lead to a victory, moving to 2-0 in the tournament after two matches.

Temple’s next match will be against Penn State (0-1), in Match 15 at 3:20. LIFe will continue against Wisconsin (0-0-1) in Match 16 at 3:43. Both matches will increase game time to 23 minutes, form 21 in the first and second rounds of the round robin.

The 2012 College Rugby Championship kicked off a little before 9 o’clock in the morning, with the Commodore Barry Bridge seeing a light morning traffic flow passing by PPL Park. Penn State’s rugby team wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard, jumping to an 5-0 lead on the opening possession. Penn State opened up a 17-0 lead, thanks to a turnover returned for a score in the second half, but was stunned in the final four seconds in the match when LIFE scored to pull within three points, and returned the ensuing possession by maneuvering the ball around the pitch and scoring after time expired. LIFE shocked Penn State 19, 17 to move to 1-0 in the tournament.

Penn State takes on Wisconsin in match 10, scheduled for 11:59 a.m. kickoff. LIFE will take on Temple at 11:38 a.m.
