Challenger Final: Florida 20, Maryland 14

Florida had a rough going in pool play, but they managed to beat Maryland in their first match of the weekend. Perhaps fittingly, the Gators wrapped up their weekend with another victory against the Terps. In a rematch of Saturday’s game, Florida and Maryland met in the Challenger Final, playing solely for pride at this point. Florida took the challenger’s final, 20-14.

Maryland’s Matthew Quigley opened the scoring with an early try and a conversion gave the Terps a quick 7-0 lead in the first minute. But Florida’s Joshua Nicdao put the Gators on the board in the third and seventh minutes with a try to take  a lead in to the half. Michael Breske’s try in the tenth minute extended the Florida lead to 15-7 in the second half. Maryland’s Karl Rempe dashed down the left sideline for a try late in the half for the final score of the match.

Florida and Temple played one of the more entertaining matches of the weekend, needing sudden death overtime to settle the score in a wide open match. Florida’s Peter Mulville finally found the open field to give the Gators a victory in the 19th minute of the match.

Brett Stubbs opened the scoring for the Gators in the first minute, with Lucas Baistrocchi kicking one of two conversions in the match. The Owls answered a few minutes later when Devon Sugg broke lose for a try to get Temple on the board, starting the seesaw battle. Temple took a 19-14 lead but the Gators looked to gain control with two straight tries to take a 24-19 lead. Temple scored after the buzzer with Peter Mulville punching in for a try, but a missed conversion left the game tied up at the end of regulation.

Florida will play the winner of the North Carolina State vs. Army match in round two.

Dartmouth clinched the top seed in Pool B with a shutout of the Florida Gators.

Dartmouth scored twice in the first half, with Madison Hughes and Will Muellwe each scoring a try, and Derek Fish picking up the conversion each time for a 14-0 halftime lead. With the pace slowing down in the second half, Dartmouth’s Kevin Clark took a route right up the middle of the field from midfield, used a stiff arm and high step to break a  tackle on his way to a try to help Dartmouth start to pull away from the Gators.

Dartmouth will play Wisconsin in the championship bracket’s opening round Sunday. The Badgers finished second in Pool A on Saturday. Florida will play the Temple Owls in the challenger bracket.

The first afternoon match of the 2012 Collegiate Rugby Championships was certainly not lacking in physicality. With both Florida and Delaware refreshed from the morning sessions, the tough match in Pool B was intense from the start. In the end, Delaware picked up the hard-fought win with a 17-10 victory.

Florida opened the scoring with a Joshua Nicdao and Michael Breske tries putting the Gators up 10-0 five minutes in Florida and looked to be taking care of Delaware, but the Blue Hens battled back  with a Pat Goldring giving some momentum before the half. Patrick Mullarkey’s two scores in the second half were the difference.

Delaware will be back on the field in a couple of hours to wrap up the first afternoon mini-session. The Blue Hens will take on Maryland at 4:06 p.m. Florida will return to the pitch to face Dartmouth, who is off to a dominating start in defense of their 2011 championship. Maryland dazzled early with a long scoring run down the left sideline by Trevor Tanifum, using speed to his advantage along the way and never looking back. The Terps and Gators would go to the half tied at 7-7. It was not until midway through the second half that Florida broke the tie, but after missing the conversion the Gators held a 12-7 lead. Maryland attempted to work the entire field to score for the next couple of minutes but Florida’s defense held strong and turned the momentum the other way with a long scoring try of their own to pull away and seal a victory in the final minute, 19-7.

Florida will open the afternoon session against Delaware (0-1), who lost to Dartmouth in Match 3 31-5. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:11 p.m. Maryland will wrap up the morning session against Dartmouth (1-0) in Match 11.
